Phelps' mother’s clothing choice boosts Chico’s business

There’s no doubt that Michael Phelps will get product endorsements following his eight gold medals.

But, his mom won’t be left out, either. In fact, she’s already got her own collection of clothing — The Phelps Collection by Chico’s.

Chico’s, a specialty retailer of women’s clothing based in Fort Myers, Fla., said Debbie Phelps visited her favorite Chico’s store in Maryland before leaving for Beijing and outfitted herself from head to toe in mix-and-match outfits.

“She spent the week cheering her son to record breaking gold while wearing Chico's signature Travelers Collection and unique novelty print tops,” the company touted in a media release. “Now, Debbie's long list of accomplishments not only includes mother to the world's greatest athlete, but also fashion plate!”

Phelps, no doubt, has been good for business.

“Ever since Debbie first wore Chico's in Beijing, our phone lines have been ringing off the hook," Chico's Brand President Michele Cloutier said. “Women everywhere want to know how to get Debbie's look.”

There's no official relationship now, but "we are talking to her people," said Chico’s spokeswoman Jessica Wells.
