Male drivers have been found to be more likely than women to take their eye off the road while fiddling with music, talking on a mobile or eating and drinking.
A survey of 1,350 drivers found that men were more prone to becoming involved in a crash or near miss as a result of distraction.
Drivers admitted becoming distracted while adjusting the car stereo and handling CDs, talking or sending text messages on a mobile and reading a map.
Other distracting behaviour included shaving or putting on makeup, reading a newspaper and chasing insects.
